Expectations for assignment 3: I have emailed it to you

I peer reviewed Saeed

What inspired me to create a video is that I feel that making a video would be pretty easy rather than drawing. Because I suck at drawing but with a video, I get to talk more about my topic. My audience is for the people who have read Ms. marvel and for those who haven’t read Ms. marvel. It would be hard for the people who haven’t read Ms. marvel, however, I tried my best explaining who she is at the beginning of the video. I want you to learn Ms. Marvel is a role model to anyone who is dealing with their own problems. Therefore, I believe Kamala Khan can inspire anyone. It’s like the comic book is saying anyone can be a superhero. In the beginning, I was undecided whether I should make a poster or make a video. So i chose the one that will be talking more about this comic book. The comic book inspired me by Kamala showing how confidence is very important. Especially if someone is an introvert like I am. When I started creating my second video for class, It made me realize that I enjoy making and editing videos. For me, I find it so much fun. Throughout the comic book, I’ve learned to have a lot of confidence with yourself and you shouldn’t put a mask on, to hide your true colors. The panel that inspired me the most was when Kamala and her dad were having a father and daughter conversation. And her dad was telling her that Kamala shouldn’t pretend to be someone else. That she should be proud and comfortable for who she is. If I were to change anything in this video, would be nothing. I am very proud of my video. I hope you enjoy watching my video! 🙂

PS: My video wouldn’t upload through the blog. And I’ve tried emailing to professor, Polish but it says the video was too long. So I decided to post it on my Youtube account. The video is public so anyone can see. Here’s the link, Thank you 🙂

Rough Draft #3

  1. Does my explination towards my project make sense?
  2. What pages in the comic book do you suggest I should put that leads to transitioning to Ms. Marvel.
  3. Do you agree with the song selection I’ve chosen. Do you disagree that I should have music playing in the background or using it in the video in general.

In Ms. Marvel, I want to create a video focusing on the main character Kamala Khan and her transition to become a hero in Jersey City. I’m guessing for making videos it should be 3-5 minutes long, so that is what I’ll be doing. For starters, I will be placing sticky notes on the pages that will illustrate Kamala transformation into Ms. Marvel. On each page, I’ll be describing the emotions the character is expressing, Kamala thoughts, Kamala actions to how it connects with her emotions, bolded words connect with Kamala emotio/ action, etc. I will be going in depth about each comic book I place my sticky note and it will show Kamala transforming into someone who has so much confidence, butt kicking, beautiful and is comfortable for being who she is. (I will be showing you the pages that I’ve chosen for my video at the end). I am also thinking of adding music in the background like the theme song of either Justice Leage or Justice Leage Unlimted cartoon show.. somewhere that sounds like a herioc song lol. I’m not sure if I should play it when I’m showing the pages i’ve selected or play it through out the whole video, the volume of the music will be lowered since I will be speaking. Overall, that is pretty much what I have in order to make my video.

Pre draft assignment for #3

Today in class I learned that comic books can open a reader’s mind to new ways of storytelling. The images in comic books connect with the words that are bolded and show hidden messages. It can engage readers to learn how to read visually and comic books can be helpful for readers who are comfortable reading visually. Also, I noticed that half the people in my class are going to draw out scenes in the comic. This made me noticed that comic books can increase imagination by using a combination of text and images in the comic books in order to tell your story. I’m interested in either making a poster or a video about Kamala Khan and her ways of transitioning to be Ms. Marvel. By doing either project, will help me focus on the bolded text that any of the characters are saying or Kamala own thoughts. Also, if I do create a video about Ms. Marvel I can talk more about the character transition and the viewer can see the expression and physical movement (hands) talking about Ms. Marvel. As I was reading Ms. Marvel I like how Kamala Khan is the first Muslim hero in her own series. Since Kamala is a teenager, I can relate to her wanting to fit in with her classmates or a certain group and not having much confidence in herself when it comes to seeing someone who is better than you. It taught me how to be confident, be that butt kicking girl and just be comfortable with who you are, and don’t be someone else just so you feel like you belong in that certain group. I am super excited for making this project! This is going to be my second time making a video as an assignment for my class so I am definitely looking forward making a video on Ms. Marvel!!

My Artist Statement:

Hello Professor Polish! Welcome back again on reading my second essay. This essay will demonstrate my research on the topic community college students who are diagnosed with a mental health condition using Marijuana as a peace of mind. My essay can target for the people who can relate on being a marijuana user and individuals who have/are experiencing with depression. Also for the people who have a friend that is struggling just as the characters in the play and want to be there for the person. My audience will learn about depression, maladaptive perfectionism, marijuana and lack of supportive among community college health center. My audience will be able to learn that because they will learn that depression is the major cause of students not graduating in community colleges, due to lack of health related resources. In which it is a serious issue. My perspective toward this topic is that I can relate to experiencing depression, not in my college year but my high school year. If I talked more about the other characters stories, most people would connect to how they are feeling, behavior and thinking. I’ve learned how to do my research paper on using the library academic databases to find scholarly articles. I dislike doing research paper because it takes patience to come up with a question/topic you wan to discuss about. The peers that I’ve worked with were really helpful. They gave me good advice on what topic I should primarily focus on. They told me to chose a topic I would feel more comfortable to write about in which I did. Doing a research paper would always make me want to pull my hair off, but I’m glad I’ve finished doing one because it’s preparing us for the future research paper we will do. If I had another week to finish my essay, I would want to mostly work on community college health center resources. I would go more in depth about this issue. Overall, Enjoy reading my essay!

College Students Coping Through Depression

Intersections is a play written and performed by students at Laguardia Community College. This fascinating and engaging play has captured my attention when I started reading the script given out in class. It captivated me and other students because it brings out different stories about college students going through troublesome in which can relate to our daily life experiences. Janelle which is one of the characters in the play, tells us a story that can relate to an individual who’s going through mental illnesses due to losing someone important. Stories like these can engage the audience because it’s a play giving us a reality check about college students situations, emotions, and handling their behavior on issues like Janelle and other characters in the play.

College can make an individual feel honored and rewarded for getting accepted to the college they’ve applied to. It’s a new beginning chapter in an individual’s life, opening doors to opportunities, new knowledge, reaching their goals, and experiencing life in a new way. Furthermore, it can be challenging for students being under pressure with the amount of work especially the ones who are at risk developing or already diagnosed with mental illness known as depression. Depression is a common mental illness that an individual feel moodiness, anxious, loss of interest activities, irritability, difficult to concentrate, and memory loss. In addition depression peak at any age, but often begins at a young age, early 20’s or early 30’s. People who go through this experience shouldn’t take is as a sign of vulnerability or a negative personality, in which it’s natural to feel down sometimes. Plus. depression is a treatable medical condition.

As a Laguardia community college student myself, I can relate the feeling of being overly stressed out about how much work needs to be done in order to get the best grade in class. Being a college student is very challenging because you want to prove yourself that you can be a responsible adult managing your time on being committed on getting things done. That way you can have a successful professional career. However, it’s the hardest job in the world. It’s a continuous battle to organize, study, understanding the subject, and to truly understand how to be successful with the education you are needed for your major. Situations like these can cause students to weight themselves with stress over how difficult the class can be. Similarity, community college students often appear to lose their motivation on completing their assignments due to misunderstanding their professors / subject. Once students start to lose their desire to continue their work, they begin to lose interest in attending their classes. This particular issue associate with students experiencing depression.

In the play, Janelle similarly is dealing the same pressure as a college student. In her scene, she is having a conversation with her professor, they both discussed about Janelle disappearance in her classes. For instance, Janelle professor states “I hope you don’t drop the class. You have so much potential” (Intersections 20). Her professor sees Janelle as an intelligent women that don’t deserve to fail her class because of likeable perspective. However, Janelle is not in the right mindset to be attending classes due to her grandma’s stage 4 lung cancer. As she stated, “If I come to class anyways I can’t focus” (Intersections 20). Janelle lack of concentration and motivation is one of the symptoms of depression. Her character can make a connection with someone who’s dealing of losing a significant other. Also, Janelle characteristic of wanting to help her grandma show she is willing to give her all the love even if she’s dealing with her own inner issues. An example, she implied “Nothing can stop me from helping” (Intersections 21). Any individual is willing to support the person they care about the most, and that is what Janelle wants to do.

Perfectionism plays a huge role on having negative reactions that lead to college students experiencing depression. On the next scene, Janelle is experiencing an unhealthy performance to her sister Danielle. It all started off by Danielle asking about school, instead Janelle primarily asks about grandma well being. Danielle later on said “The nurse gave her the last of it before she left. There’s no more medicine” (Intersections 20). Janelle then develops a negative attitude by stating “You dare to ask me what’s wrong? Why I can’t focus? Why I’m not going to class? Our grandmother is dying! You or I, or that bullshit of a nurse can’t do anything about it” (Intersections 21). Janelle is aggressively throwing her anger about the illness to Danielle face. For this reason, I consider Janelle high performance as maladaptive perfectionism. Maladaptive perfectionism is defined as “Perfectionists possess high standards, view their accomplishments as consistently falling short of their lofty goals, and experiencing distress as a result” (Noble, 81). It can associate with depression because it can “lead to negative psychological outcomes” (Noble, 82). Such as anxiety, stress, and less desirable academic performance. This demonstrates the act of an individual who are behaviorally distress about a personal issue.

Depression is a serious medical condition that can happen to any individual by a traumatic experience or is passed on genetically by a family member. Being in the phase of isolation between the people you are close to, in which makes an individual feel lonely and weak. Individuals who experience depression, are often prescribed to “antidepressants to help relieve the stress” (Hutchmaker, 2015). However, other individuals use Marijuana substance as a way to cope their certain pressure in their lives. Such as stress, relationships, exams, and deadlines. Marijuana is referred as a cannabis plant that contains chemical tetrahydrocannabinol. This substance is being used on people who experiencing depression, anxiety, stress. It allows an individual to “Focus on the situation objectively, by offering peace of mind enough to forget for a while” (Hutchmaker, 2015). In addition, marijuana is resourceful for the ones who need to feel more marvelous and calm rather than having a repetitive negative thoughts.

Individuals smoke marijuana want to have the sense of clarity when it comes to having a stressful day. There are users who use this substance to forget about their own issues on their daily basis. Stress is the most common reason why people use this drug every day. In the play, one of the characters name Mike uses marijuana regularly. Mike is introduced in the play talking to his girlfriend Bethany finishing their meal at a restaurant. They both had a conversation about Mike’s financial issues, and later on turns into an argument. Bethany claims smoking marijuana is one of Mike’s hobbies. Mike admittedly stated “I smoke” then Bethany responds “Like every hour” (Intersections 13). Furthermore, Bethany knows Mike is unsatisfied with his life by claiming “You’re unhappy. So smoking makes you happy” (Intersections 14). Then Mike gets upset sounding as if he is addicted to smoking marijuana every day by saying “So what if I smoke a little bud, Shit, It makes me feel better” Bethany responds back saying “I hope it keeps you happy.” (Intersections 14). Marijuana makes an individual feel like your head is in the clouds and stress free with the problems you don’t want to think about.

As students begin their journey in community colleges, it often makes them feel anxious about how will they survive college. Moreover, community college students at the age of 25 and younger are at the highest point of developing depression. Community college open doors to a diversity college, however have “fewer resources” that can lead to low graduation rate. Students attending community colleges are diagnosed with depression are at 49% in 2016. On the other hand, 4 year university colleges are at 11% of showing symptoms any mental health condition. The reason why community college has a higher percentage than a  four year college because the lack of mental health services and programs unlike the four year colleges. Furthermore, “many community colleges do not have any mental health counselors” (Eisenberg, Goldrick-rab). This shows that students are lacking support from their own college. In the article, “Here’s Another Reason Why Many Community College Students Do Not Get Their Degree” comes up with possible solutions to reduce the percentage of college student not receiving medical attention sources. For example, a national non profit name “Non Stop” is assisting community college students “assessing public benefits and services” (Eisenberg, Goldrick-rab). Making and building an organization to help and prosper mental health communities for individuals to show effort on attending classes in college.

To conclude, depression among community college students is a constant battle with yourself because individuals are not mentally prepared on balancing responsibilities such as homework versus having repetitive negative thoughts. Plus, Marijuana makes an individual like the feeling of more relaxed phase rather than consuming yourself with dark thoughts. Intersections is inspiring yet emotional because it demonstrates our daily basis situations that we as humans struggle to go through. Especially, among community college students are overly stressed out about getting the grade they want for the class. This play made me realize that I’m not alone on having this feeling of being overwhelmed with the amount of work we get in our classes, and sometimes it’s okay to have this feeling because we all need to arise, stay focused and keep moving towards your goals.

Intersections is a play written and performed by students at Laguardia Community College. This delightful play has captured my attention when I started reading the script. It captivated me and other students because it brings out different stories of college students going through troublesome in which can relate to our daily life experiences. For instance, in the play one of the characters name Janelle seems to be dealing with depression because of her grandma’s illness. Janelle story can relate to any individual who’s going through distress because of losing a significant other. Depression is a brain disorder to make an individual feel moodiness, loss of interest activities, loss of appetite causing them to feel this way every day. Across the worldwide adolescents go through this illness ages 10-19 years old. Depression is a very serious cause of death because it can lead to suicide. In my opinion, I relate depression to one of the characters in the play Intersections. The character I chose is Janelle. In the play, Janelle was devastated to hear her grandma having stage 4 cancer. All Janelle really wanted to do was to take her grandma back home and take care of her rather than being in the hospital with strangers. In this scene, people can relate to how Janelle is feeling because when someone important to you is feeling sick, your first priority is to be there for them. You want to help them, support them, love them and make them not go through with it alone.

In addition, two scenes made me realize the symptoms of depression that teens go through. Janelle was roaming in the hallway skipping class. It seemed like Janelle has lost interest in attending class because she has a lot going on at home. Janelle states “If I come to class anyways I can’t focus”. In another scene, Janelle arrived home and was getting upset with Danielle because the nurse is not helping her grandma enough since she has reached her morphine limit. Janelle behavior shows how irritable she is about her grandma’s illness. Then it leads to Janelle possibly going to buy Marijuana for grandma in order to ease her pain. It makes me think, Janelle could also be using this substance, that way to make her feel relaxed and not think about her grandma coming to an end. So far this is all I have, I really appreciate if you leave some comments in order to help me get rid of my fogginess

So far this is all I have. I really appreciate if you leave some comments in order to help me get rid of my fogginess I have for this research paper.  Thank you 🙂

Draft expectations #2

I’m super excited that I get to read one of Laguardia community college play they wrote and performed. First thing first I love reading play scripts because I love reading a dialogue. But so far I really like the “Intersections” play. I want to read continue and finish reading it for on day because John says it’s really good. But I will take my time reading it over the break! Plus, I know after reading this script I would want to see the play visually. Anyways, I’m looking forward doing research about this play. I believe I’ll be getting at least a B for this assignment, however, I will try my best to aim higher and to keep up my good work. Meaning I want to go super deep on what I will be writing about. I want all my thoughts to be clear, organized, and make it understandable for my reader. I want to give that insight and be super detailed on my assignments like how you mentioned in class. I also want to in detail on my peer reviews rough draft. I want to be super helpful for them in order to get rid of the fogginess and make it clear by giving my ideas to them. Not only my peers will help me out but Professor Polish as well. I can talk to her after class or email her asking any questions about to play, that way I feel like I’m catching up during class discussions. Overall, the play “Intersections” has really drawn my attention especially reading Alex and Louisa conversation. And now Janelle, Daniella, and Travis were even more interesting. Now I have to be prepared to get my tissues ready when I’ll be reading more into “Intersections”.

pre draft – Assignment #2

Students created a play called Intersections and conducted their research by using their own personal experience of themselves or someone they know. Each of these stories can be relatable from our own experience. For example, Janelle and her decision for taking care of her grandma as her first priority over school show how much her grandma means to her. And we all can relate to having a close relationship with a friend or a family member and show how much they mean to you. The research I want to do on my own is having a one on one Q&A interview with the cast members. I could also research about drugs in particular MarijuanaMarijuana can be used medically for people who are ill. Also, it’s a drug to make people feel relaxed. The reason why I’m mentioning drugs because in the play the character Janelle stated “the shit I can buy on the street is better than those fucking pills. At least with this, she will be at ease”. I also want to examine about why they chose to end the play with Alex and Janelle. I want to know if one of the cast members ever had someone gone through that experience.

The play Intersections grabbed my attention in the beginning by Louisa and Alex. Alex situation can be relatable because not many students have support on majoring something they love doing. As I read further, there were more characters involved but with different stories. All these characters are showing their emotion/mood on how they are struggling with their own problems. Doing research on this play will enhance my expressions because I get to receive good information about why they chose to end it that way, why would they change ideas in the script, which cast member is comparing themselves with one of the characters, etc.

Research is defined as investigating a question or thought you have about a certain topic. As you are researching you are discovering facts, theories and trying to figure out your analysis, it’s like you’re doing a jigsaw puzzle. Research should be guided as a helpful tool for trying to find out more information about your assignment whether it’s a book, play, video, poem, etc. Doing research can make you focus on the theory you have for example, in Intersections students will be focusing on the cast members comparing and contrasting the characters personal issues. Also, they would want an answer to their “why’s” questions.

My Artist Statement:

Hello Professor Polish and to anyone who’s bored randomly looking at our classmate’s project! Welcome to my essay where you will be reading a lot of my deeper thoughts about the poem I’ve chosen. My audience that I’m targeting at are the people who’ve gone the phase of losing someone. I want to have a connection with the people who dealt with loss in their life. What you’re going to learn from my project is the five stages of grief. Not many people know about these phases, in which it could be helpful because it can model for them to go through great loss. One of my peers made me noticed that I have mentioned something different that the class haven’t been said, which is the five stages of grief. I learned that spoken word poem isn’t only about the poet reading their poem out loud but also expressing their facial / body language to the crowd because it demonstrated their emotions. I would really like to learn how to write poems, I’ve never had the chance to create my own poem. During class discussions, my peers helped me understand few parts about the poem because they explained something that I couldn’t figure out. Poetry made me think not only focus on the rhythm but the setting, and the details that way I can analyze and comprehend. The poem I’ve chosen to analyze is by Irfan Adib called “Dear Mum”, will be the essay I will elaborate, and help the reader understand Adib emotion toward his mother in which I’ve tried my very best! Anyways enjoy reading my essay!

Grief and Acceptance

When we lose someone very dearly as humans we mourn over someone who was once very special to us. It takes a while for an individual to cope through this painful process. To lose someone unique and memorable is a heartbreaking experience we humans go through as life cycle that consists series of changes. I believe the five stages of grief can be a model for someone who’s grieving and having a difficult time to accept their new change in life. It helped me accept my grandfather death in 2012. The poet Irfan Adib made a beautiful spoken word poem video reading out his poem called “#dear mum” on Youtube. Adib video can relate to anyone who experienced losing someone significant.

When I first started watching Adib spoken word poem, got me really emotional. The feeling of having a lump in my throat for holding my emotions for so long hurt so bad. Throughout the video, all I kept thinking about was my grandfather. I grew up living with my grandpa and grandma ever since I’ve moved to New York from Ecuador. While my mom was busy finishing her education and my dad working, my grandparents would spend time with me every day. I remember whenever my grandfather back would be hurting he would always ask me to stand on his back with my two bare feet, walking back and forth till my grandmother joins in and massage his back after my work was done. This was a teamwork between myself and my two grandparents. My other favorite memory with my grandpa was that every time we would hear the ice cream truck play their song in my neighborhood. I would always dash out the door, be the first child in the line waiting for my grandpa to come out and buy ice cream. We would always sit outside eating ice cream, talking and laughing. All the great memories I’ve created with him were so memorable and unforgettable. When he died on 2012, I was in the phase of denial, anger, and bargaining. My anger made me isolate between my best friend and family. It made me miss all the good memories, all I kept thinking was “If only”. What I mean by “If only” is during those times of us hanging out, I was afraid to tell him “I love you”. I missed my chances of telling him how grateful and thankful I was to have such a caring, spontaneous, loveable grandfather any niece/nephew would have. In addition, me and other viewers can relate to Ifran Adib spoken word poem because I had so many chances to tell him how much he meant the world to me, but I’ve missed that chance. I may have missed the chance to tell him how I felt, but every night I pray to remind him how much I miss and love him very dearly.

Ifran Adib spoken word poem not only caught my feelings of going through the memory lane but also I’ve noticed how Ifran facial/body language was illustrating in the video. He kept doing a lot of hand movement because he knew he has to edit the video. He knew a lot of people will see his video on Youtube. In order to make it look more appealing to the viewers. In addition, he knows that everyone will share or recreate their own story about their mom by using “#” just like he did with his title for his poem. In our world today, the pound sign means a hashtag in every social media. Meaning, the pound sign is used to identify messages on a topic. A lot of people who relate to what he was talking about will feel connected with his video. In the comments, I’ve read one comment stating “Such an emotional spoken word. But sadly I can’t relate to it and will know never the love of a mother cause I just never experienced it”. When I read this comment, my first thought was how much it would suck to not grow up with your birth mother and how grateful it is to have my mother being a part of my life. My second thought is that the video was not only delivering a message about our mothers. But Ifran wanted us to relate his grief about losing someone important. I believe the poem we’re for people who lost an individual’s own illness, a close relationship, family member, or their own pet. In addition, Ifran share this beautiful poem on Youtube to let his viewers know now it’s the time to open up and express how you feel to the significant other whether is a family member, spouse, friend, or your pet.

The “#dearmum” spoken word poem made Ifran realize he should’ve made more good memories with his mom. He feels guilty and regret for not being there for his mom. His video was like a timeline, he began by mentioning his birth. Then goes on by mentioning his mom tuckening him for bed every night when he was young. For example, “when I was small I could never go to sleep until I call to you out from the bedroom door”. In the video, Ifran was going through one of the stages of grieving. He was going through the process of bargaining. For instance, Ifran felt guily through some parts of the video by saying “I’m sorry” a lot. He apologizes for the missed calls and for not being the son she wants him to be. Moreoever, He is showing us how he’s becoming the son she always adored by the setting of the video. He recorded his video in the kitchen which symbolizes his mom. He have the flowers on a vace, the dishes are cleaned, and the tea she always made for him whenever he was sick. The setting and the objects were symbolizing as his acceptence of feeling guilty. He demonstrated us by accepting his past and becoming the son she always adored. In which acceptence is the last stage of mourning.

Ifran Adib published a inspiring spoken word poem on social media to show us we should appreicate the people we have in our life. We should always be there for someone because feeling guilty is the worst feeling anyone can experience. Also, it can be very difficult to help someone go through grief espicially since you are not sure what to say. All we can do is being there for the person and remind them that it’s okay to cry about it. It’s okay to go feel angry, depressed, guiltyness, to have all these emotions. The five stages of grief takes time for an individual to cope.
