As I read the first assignment, my expectations for the grade I’m aiming for is at least a B+ and higher. According to the grading contract, my duties to get the grades I want is to communicate with my professor and classmates on any questions or misunderstanding I have on the poems. Also, I would hand in the assignments on the day they are due in order for my peers to review / comment my work. Plus, I wouldn’t want an incomplete work affect me and my peer grades. In addition, since I’m an introvert person I would like to participate in class to share my ideas with the rest of the class. The kind of effort I expect to put into my peer reviews is by asking them something I misunderstand. Therefore, I can comment and give suggestions to help each other be stronger writers. Another effort I can aim for is digging deeper on the message they are addressing to that way I can understand their point of view. In which is helping me expand my knowledge toward the assignment in a clearer way. Not only I’m getting help by my peers but also from my professor too. Professor Polish can help me by communicating with me. Meaning as a student responsibilities I should communicate with my professor in person or emailing her questions or any confusion towards the assignment in order to reach for the grade that I want. Not only I can receive help from my professor and my peers but also I can go to the writing center which was helpful for my english 101 assignments. The format I’m planning to use for my first assessment is doing an analytical essay and the poem I’ve chosen is called “Ebonics” by Steven Willis.

I would like to do an analytical essay for my first assignment. Doing an analytical essay will demonstrate a deep analysis of the poem I’ll be choosing because I’ll be mentioning what’s my favorite part / line of the poem and describing what it means. Also, I would want to summarize what the writer is addressing about the poem to the audience/ viewers. To whom is addressing to, the setting , the audience reaction / youtube comments. When I’ll do the analytical essay on whichever spoken word poem I’ll chose, analytical essay will teach me on what I will need to analyze in the poem. It’ll also teach me on how I want my analytical essay to flow on explaining the pattern and interpreting it so that the reader will understand the poem. Since I really want to work on organizing my essay, I feel like that should be my goal in the essay besides going in depth about the writer poem. I’m mostly concern on how the essay will turn out because I still haven’t decided what poem I want to interpret plus I’m not so good at understanding poems. However, the discussion we had in class on monday was very helpful for me because it made me understand my peers point of view toward the two poems. In addition, it made me realize that not only you need to interpret what the writer is talking about but to observe / hear the audience reaction. Both poems spoke about language and history, in which I want to analyze the lines that caught my attention about those two topics. I want to analyze the lines where the writer spoke strongly by raising their tone, observing their facial expressions. I believe doing observation would help me analyze and understand the poet feelings and the audience emotion throughout the video.

We all have experienced our loved ones being taken away from us forever. The five stages of grief help us learn how to live with the ones we lost. It’s a life cycle that we all as humans go through as series of changes in our life. The poet Ifran Adib made a video reading out his poem”#dearmum” on Youtube. In his poem, he was telling a story about his mom showing how much she loves him and would do anything for his son. His poem made me relate to how I feel with my Grandpa that passed away in 2012. His poem delivers a message about what his mother has done for him by showing him full of love and attention like any mother would do for their child.

Half way to the ending, Adib started apologizing for everything he’s done when he was young. In his poem, he realizes he was not calling nor texting his mom to ask if she needs anything or to have a mother and son conversation. As he was expressing his feelings his tone changed when he apologizes and promises to her to be the son she always adored. As a viewer, I related to what he was talking about as well with the other viewers. A lot of people comment on his spoken word poem relating to his poem. In which they realize they should appreciate their mom more often.  Not only his spoken word poem was super emotional, what caught my attention was the setting of the video. Not only his spoken word poem was super emotional, what caught my attention was the setting of the video. He recorded in his kitchen, which symbolizes as a social gathering for a family, his mom making tea for him when he was sick, a setting where all of our moms be at during the day. Adib regrets for not being there for his mother. He regrets not having the opportunity to say “I love you” to his mom but he didn’t. I believe many people find it so hard to express their feelings to their mother. It sucks that some people find it so hard to open up to their mother and have the relationship where they’re both are best friends. A mother would be the greatest best friend you can have, who will never leave you. Adib wrote a beautiful spoken word poem not only to get us to hold back our tears but he was delivering a message to the viewers to tell our mothers that we should be super thankful for their nurture and endless love they give us every day.
