spoken word for assignment # 3

Peer Pressure
By: Nathalie Bonilla

As I enter the party
jocks hand me a drink
I ask what is in this big red cup
He answers just some juice
Thinking to myself
if I don’t take a sip
I won’t be a big hit
Spitting out this nasty
tasting drink out of my mouth
Looking around thinking
how can people enjoy this booze
The guy who’s supposed to be my best friend
But who is very in love with me
Takes away the fun cup
He knows I’m not that type of girl
After trying this awful drink
Trying to blend into the party
Hanging out with people
who I think are my friends
I get penalized from the scent
that is in nature normal to me
I get embarrassed
I have a shadow named Bruno following me
I know his intentions mean well
Asking what I am doing in such a place
Your right why would a nerdy calm girl
be doing here
Late night at a party
trying alcohol for the first time
Having his shadow follow me around
Trying to protect me from this party
He asks me what I’m doing here
Like any other teenage girl
I am trying to party on a Friday night
Which may change my life forever
My strict parents don’t know
that im out this late at night
I’m sure if Bruno was Pakistani
my parents would be setting our by wedding now
I want to live my life
and have no one control me
I just want to be a normal teenager
I know sneaking out wasn’t the answer
But Abu and Abu-Jann don’t understand
What I would do
to live a normal young adult life
My grades are perfect
I do everything they ask me to do
What about me
And What I want to do
I know this night changed my life
But for the better
I’m not just kamala any more
I’m Mz marvel.

As I enter the party jocks hand me a drink. Thinking to myself if I don’t take a sip I won’t be a big hit. Tasting the acidy thirst quencher, Makes me want to barf it all back up just from a sip I just took. Looking around thinking how can people enjoy this orange potion drink? The guy who’s supposed to be my best friend but also very in love with me takes away the fun cup. After trying to fit this disgusting awful drink I get penalized from the scent that is in nature normal to me. After getting peer pressured into taking a sip of orange pollution into my body. I get embarrassed I have a shadow named Bruno following me asking what I am doing in such a place. Your right why would a nerdy calm Islamic girl be doing here late night at a party trying alcohol for the first time. Having this shadow follow me around trying to stop my every move of “making a bad decision” which can maybe change my life forever. Asking me if my strict parents know I’m out this late of the night. Pre-draft for assignment 3
• What did you learn in class on Monday that impacted how you approach reading comic and or understanding ms marvel? Did it impact your choice of format for this assignment?
On Monday in class I learned how difficult or I should say challenge it is to make a comic book. There is a lot of thought and many details that you need to focus on. I found it to be so interesting when we were able to make our own mini comic. You either start with an image in your head that you grow from. Or you begin with a story and you just imagine what the character will look like. In class I started with the image first which became a doctor who was a dad and had his daughter in his hospital hurt from something that she had broken. This at first was funny that my character became what it became. Mz marvel is a really good comic I love everything about it I am really enjoying it. I have never opened a comic book before in my life. I am glad this one was the first I could have opened. I’m looking forward to finishing this assignment strong. I’m thinking of maybe making a drawing for my assignment.
• What format are you thinking of using?
I’m thinking of maybe using the format of a drawing to show the emotion of the scene that I want to use for my project.
• What unique about thus format that will allow you to learn more about the comic than what is expressed on the surface?
Well the only thing you see on the surface is basically the drawings and the text. But something you should pay close attention to is the facial expressions and the surroundings that the characters have around them. That’s what makes the scene more interesting.
• What questions or concerns or excitements do you have about creating a project in this format?
I’m very excited to see what I come up with but I am also very concerned on how I will be able to portray this drawing to explain what I’m trying to say. I want to make sure my audience understands what I’m trying to say.
• What is ms marvel teaching you about writing so far?
Mz marvel is teaching me that you need to be very precise and clear on what you are trying to say in your text. And to make sure that your text matches the images on what’s going on. Make sure your characters show the emotion in their face when you are writing the text. Paying attention to detail is also very important. Ill make sure to focus on my text and when I draw to keep that in mind.

Artist Statement for Assignment # 3
• What inspired you to choose the format you did for this project?
What inspired me at first was to draw a comic, but I thought to myself I would really enjoy writing a spoken word. I enjoyed the beginning of the semester a lot because of the poems we were writing. I liked how in dept the words can be. The fact that someone can say a lot just by performing a poem not just by reading words on a page.
• Who is your audience for this project? What should they know before diving into your work?
My audiences for this project are for people like my professor. I’m just kidding your not a nerd professor polish. No but my audience are people who enjoy comics and get a kick on the new things that authors create. They know exactly when and what specific comics come out.
• What do you want them to learn from your project?
I want them to learn that you can create a spoken word out of anything. I was inspired by the way that mz marvel took a sip of vodka. Just like any newbie at a party she doesn’t really know what alcohol tastes like. The peer pressures that you go through as a teenage high school girl. But in her case she’s not any ordinary teenage girl.
• Do you think they’ll be able to learn that? Why? Why not?
I hope my audience will be able to learn what I’m trying to do with this spoken word. It’s basically writing a poem from a scene that I picked out of the comic book. I really take each skit and read into if I was mz marvel what I would be thinking about being in this high school party.
• What emotional impact were you going for?
The emotion that I’m going for is sympathy but also it’s where the book is having its turning point. That night when she leaves that party she runs into captain marvel which is the one who grants her to become mz marvel so it is the beginning to a very important part of the comic book.

• What specific panels of Ms. Marvel inspired the type of project you created?
In the beginning of the comic I feel sympathy for amina, for the simple fact of how good of a girl she is but her family is so strict with her and can’t cut her any slack. The fact that she needs to sneak out in order to go to a party that she could have easily asked her parents is sad. Ig you’re a good student and you obey your parents every rule why can’t you have fun being a teenager? Being a teenager are the best years you need to start experiencing
• What did you learn about your own writing/creation process through doing this project?
I learned that I breaking down a pre draft and a pre assignment is very beneficial because it breaks down the process of creating a project. I think I will be using this method in the future with other classes. I need to be organized with my work and take breaks in between in order to expand my mind of my ideas.
• What unique perspective did you bring to your close reading of Ms. Marvel that someone else might not have? What is the value of this perspective?
When I started reading mz marvel I was telling myself this is a girl who is in high school gets straight as has no excitement in her life. She’s smart and nerdy. She has a guy with a big crush on her so having her turn into mz marvel really kicks her life into gear. But in the beginning you can really relate to her being a normal high school student. I always just kept in mind ok I see this ordinary girl I know something drastic needs to happen because then this comic would be really boring.
• What did you learn through this project?
I learned through this project that creating a comic book or let another scene from a comic is a long process. I learned that you can either start with a drawing or make a story out of drawing that picture. Or start with a story and then draw the characters that you want them to stand for.
• What did you not learn?
Throughout this project and or class, whatever that was needed to be covered was covered. I understood many things and learned different thing I didn’t know before. There was nothing I didn’t learn.

• What would you still like to learn?
For this class I think we did well in covering spoken words, plays and comic books I enjoyed this class and last assignment because he didn’t bore me to death. I was very excited and intrigued to make sure I kept up with my deadlines and projects in order to learn efficiently and work towards the grade that I want.
• What, if any, role did class discussions and your peers play in your project?
I really liked that fact that we would do peer review. For the second project I had help from my classmates to help me create my research question. I liked the fact that I can have my classmates give me a different point of view for my project. To help me understand more. I know we have our professor to turn to if we need help but it’s also helpful to have classmates help us as well.
• If you had another week to work on your project, what would you do with it? How would you change it?
I would defiantly want to make a spoken word with the whole comic book. Take my time and break down each page and treat every page differently to make it very interesting. I think I would go as far as recording myself and performing it.
• What will you take with you from this project into future projects?
I never knew I was able to write poetry let alone spoken word. I loved this trope of poetry because you can write anything and make it your own like your own style. You can perform it however you want.
• The last thing you want to tell your audience before they dive into your project is…
What I want my audience to know about my project is to read the comic page before or after, it’s up to you if you want to read the spoken word first before you see the page that I based it on.

College is a very stressful time in lives of young adults, they have deadlines to meet and a life to keep up with.It is difficult to work and go to school but many people do it. Along with trying to graduate we tend to look for methods or ways to help with the stress of going to school. I know many people can relate to this stress, like any young weak minded adult leaving high school and starting college. Young adults haven’t experienced the reality of life until we start college. Young adults tend to use weed or alcohol as an outlet to relieve some stress that we endure when we get into our later stage of life. The challenge comes into place, when we need to balance school, work and a social life. Everyone has different responsibilities some adults drop out because the pressure of balancing life takes over. For many people turning to something like weed or alcohol is easy to do. But what community college stressors make young adults resort to weed and alcohol. What makes these young adults steer off to trying these substances and using them long term.
Stress is an emotional and mental strain due to difficult circumstances. It is very easy for a person to get stressed. Stress is a complicated word to describe because everyone stresses differently. It not only damages your mental health but it also affects your physical well being. There are many triggers that lead to stress. According to the stress and substance abuse program. Being young can create anxiety and other health problems that will only carry on to other stages of adulthood. It can interfere with your love life and school life. Believe it or not but there any many stages of stress. One being that stress can become chronic stress which is so harmful that it starts to bother the levels of chemicals in your body. Other stressors can be major life changes like moving to a new house or job. Relationships can fail and you can resort to unhealthy habits such as substance abuse. It is normal for someone to feel like they need to resort to something that will help with stress. But the problem is some college students use weed and alcohol as a best short term solution. It’s dangerous for people to start because it can lead to addiction. If addiction occurs the person will have a very hard time stopping. This may turn into losing everything such as possessions, health, friends, family and even self respect. Little do people know weed and alcohol like any other substance can raise the stress of your life more than it was before. You can almost see the chain reaction the stress causes the person to turn to substances. Being in college we need to wake up early, commute, come home late and complete our assignments. Lack of sleep or energy, headaches and anxiety are some symptoms of being stressed. Being a college student regardless of how many classes you take your already at a high level of stress.
The question comes down to why young adults turn to weed and alcohol during college years. I’ve interviewed and have done my research to understand what makes adolescences steer off to using weed and alcohol in an abusive way. To start with my research I interviewed a unit assistant I work with Kelsea Williams. I’ve asked her a few questions about when she was in college and why she used weed as her outlet. Kelsea Williams attended Kingsborough community college. She only attended one semester because she couldn’t take the stress of deadlines and making it to school on time. This made her steer to using marijuana. She specifically stated how she would stress out about putting in the time and work for school. She admitted that she became very lazy and other would worry about not knowing if she was making the right choices for her present and future self. She now is full time at her job and is thinking of going back to school. She smokes everyday regularly and said she would minimize to only weekends when she goes back to school. Many students use marijuana to relax and relieve stress. They often use this drug a lot in parties, or in preparation for events. Even though young adults support marijuana it has never been associated with an overdose. Marijuana can be found in student homes, bars, and social events. Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug from students surveyed in 2015 according to drug rehab. A national survey in 2015 noticed that 19.3 percent of college students ages 18-22 reported marijuana use in the past month. Marijuana has a lot of effects among young adults such as laziness, impaired body movement, breathing problems, increased heart rate and paranoia. Students who use marijuana no matter if it’s at a high or moderate level may lack motivation. This can cause a student to miss class, assignments, important appointments even job interviews.
“College students have greater access to drugs today than they had in the past. With this availability comes to risk of students developing abusive habits during their college years”. According to the drug rehab center, studies have shown in college students have more opportunities to buy and consume. Alcohol is the most commonly used substance that young adults use in college. Drinking to the point of intoxication has been rooted into today’s college culture. This type of behavior can lead to visits to the hospital, accidents and deaths. According to the national institute on alcohol abuse and alcoholism students in college feel like it’s a ritual to take part of these types of actions because they are in a higher education. Alcohol affects your brain, heart, liver and pancreas. Drinking too much will weaken your immune system and make your body prone to diseases and sickness. It can lead to numerous side affects like stomach issues, reduced coordination, slurred speech, nausea, anxiety. Heavy alcohol consumption can interfere with your academic progress. It can mess with attending and early class or being too hung over to comprehend the lesson being taught. These are many reasons why alcohol should be consumed on a moderate and celebratory level.
Many students stress differently especially when we attend college. But it’s up to young adults to find ways to overcome the stress and keep it under control. Stress just increases with our age. We pick up more responsibilities and obligations as we age which comes with new experiences and challenges. As young adults we need to nurture ourselves in learning how to cope with stress. So when we get older and hit our peak it will be easier on how to take things on in life. I believe in young adult’s college years these traits need to be mastered. College years are important no matter what college we go to or what we go to school for, these stressors will always push young adults towards weed, alcohol or any type of substances. But it starts from now to learn what is important enough to stress over and what isn’t worth stressing at all.

Pre-draft for assignment 2
o What you’ve read of Intersections so far, what kinds of research do you think its playwrights had to do in order to write it?
I believe the playwrights had a lot of research to do. From the hospital scene knowing what has to be done in the situation that they were in. You need to know what hospice is and why it is offered. From the police academy training to the act in gap when there was a manger talking to their employee. I’m sure the playwrights interviewed a lot of people in order to get the insight of what it is to deal with the situations that were played in intersections. In order for a play to be good you need to get in character emotionally and physically so doing your research to make it feel realistic is important.

o How might some research of your own help you conduct a deep, specific analysis of Intersections?
I think overall they have researched a lot of what they put into their play in the sense of making is feel so real. To me they have done a great job so I’m sure where ever they got their information from it was from a valid source in every way.

o What kinds of sources might you want to examine? What about Intersections has grabbed you (or not) so far?
I would want to examine the scene where the cop is in the academy. To me it was very interesting for them to know what training they need to endure and how much they need to remember. Also the scene in the hospital I’m sure they need to know what hospice is and when it is offered in what scenario. Also when the grandmother has cancer how do they know the differences in the stages of cancer. I personally work in a cancer hospital so right away I could tell that there research was correct. The whole play has grabbed my attention, some scenes than others. I just liked how they all combine together and I wonder if there will be a part two to this play.

o How might different forms of research enhance and/or challenge your initial impressions?
There are many different ways that you can conduct research, you can use the internet, books, newspapers, magazines. But you can also interview someone for reserch, this form of research can alternate the way you think about something initially. So I would think that would be the only way it would enhance your impression.

o What does “research” mean to you?
Research to me means that you go in dept in the topic that you need more information for. When you research something it means your going to know the ins and outs of the topic to really understand it. This play was researched very well due to the emotion and the realism it has to offer.

o What do you think research should be guided by?
Research should be guided by a specific question that you want to know completely about. Such as if you want to research a specific question or subject. You need to know that topic from beginning to end. That’s how I feel research should be conducted. No matter what question is asked you will know the answer about it.

o What should motivate it? (There’s no right answer: I’m genuinely interested in your thoughts!)
There are many things that can motivate you to do research the thrill of really knowing about your question/topic for your paper. The more you research the better insight you have about the subject the better the grade you can get because you will have more information to present. You just need to make sure you organize your ideas and put it onto paper properly.
