Rough Draft for Research Paper
College is a very stressful time in our lives we have deadlines to meet and lives that we need to keep up with. Some of us already have families and some of need to support them. It is difficult to work and go to school but many of us do it. Along with trying to get a college diploma we tend to look for methods or ways that work to cope with the stress of going to school. I know many people can relate to this stress, like any adolescence we are very vurnable leaving high school and starting college. The level of stress hasn’t really hit us until we start college. Young adults tend to use weed or alcohol as an outlet to relieve some of the burden that we endure when we get into our adolescence stage of life. Many adults have a hard time balancing work and school and keeping up with both. That’s where the challenge comes into place, and it’s hard not to use weed or alcohol to help ease with the burden of daily living. Everyone has different responsibilities; some adults drop out because the pressure takes over. For many people turning to something like weed or alcohol is easy to do .For some keeping a job is important because at that point they are working to keep that habit alive. I have always asked myself what community college stressors make young adults resort to weed or alcohol? Approximately 22 percent of students graduate within three years attending community colleges according to Community College Review. Many stressors play apart in our lives, in English class we have this play we are reading that uses a lot of examples and drugs to cope with the everyday struggle as adolescence. In the play intersections there are many characters that use weed and alcohol as an outlet. Some have an upcoming death of a loved one. In another scene Relationships start to change because of substance abuse, major life changes such as a new job. All these major scenes in this play show you the stressors that many adolescence face. Like myself and my peers I know are able to relate to these stressors and how we turn to these substances to live with. I want to use this paper to understand what college student’s main stressors are and why they resort to weed and alcohol.
Stress is an emotional and mental strain due to difficult circumstances. It is very easy for a person to get stress. Stress is a complicated word to describe because everyone stresses differently. It not only damages your mental health but it also affects your physical well being. There are many triggers that lead to stress. Death of a loved one is one of them like in the play intersections we have a scene with Janelle, Travis and Danielle. In this scene the three of them have just found out that their grandmother has just been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. A death of a loved one or preparing for a death of a loved one is a trigger of stress for sure. According to the stress and substance abuse program. Being young you can defiantly endure a lot of anxiety worry and stress about this situation which will and can defiantly cloud your judgment and have you off. It can mess with your love life and defiantly your school life. Believe it or not but there any many stages of stress. One being that stress can become chronic stress which is so harmful that it starts to bother the levels of chemicals in your body. Other stressors can be major life changes like moving to a new house or job. Relationships can fail and you can resort to unhealthy habits such as substance abuse. It is normal for someone to feel like they need to resort to something to help them with the stress. But the problem is college students use weed or alcohol as a best short term solution. It’s dangerous for them to do this because this can lead to addiction. If addiction occurs the person will have a very hard time stopping. This turns into losing everything such as possesons, health, friends, family and even self respect. Little do people know weed and alcohol like any other substance raises the stress of that person’s life more than it was before. You can almost see the chain reaction the stress causes the person to turn to substances. Being in college we need to wake up early commute, come home late and complete our assignments. Lack of sleep, lack or energy, headaches, anxiety these are some symptoms of stress. Being a college student regardless of how many classes you take you are already at a high level or stress.

Artist Statement for my research paper
• Who is your audience for this paper?
This paper is for people who are about to graduate high school to young adults in high school. My essay is somewhat informative on why young adults stress and what they stress over. Also what substances they use to help them with their stress.
• What do you want them to know before reading your piece?
I want my audience to keep an open mind while understanding and learning the many stressors that young adults may experience while attending college. I want them to know that stressors can come from financial, social, and family concerns/issues.
• What do you want them to learn from your piece?
How much alcohol and marijuana can affect your school life. What stressors do young adult endure to use them to use these substances. I want this essay to over all help young adults move away from using drugs to help with stress and make them think of better ways to unstress.
• Do you think they’ll be able to learn that? Why? Why not?
I believe with the information that I have gathered, it can demonstrate how serious it is to use alcohol or weed as a substance. There needs to be healthier ways a young adult can use to be able to cope with the stress. Students shouldn’t be using or abusing substances if they need their mind and body to be successful in life.
• What unique perspective did you bring to your analysis that someone else might not have?
I used an interview as a source of research to get in dept on what it is to steer off into using marijuana. The research websites I used were really good sources of information.
• What is the value of this perspective?
The value of this perspective is to understand the stress young adults face while attending college.
• What did you learn through this paper?
I learned that it is very easy to steer off into using drugs and alcohol I know it helps ease with the stress of school and work. But in the long run it’s not worth using these substances because of the long term affects.
• What did you not learn?
I didn’t learn what other drugs young adults use to help with the stress. I know there are many more but I mostly concentrated on how stress affects young adults and why they use marijuana and alcohol as an outlet specifically.
• What would you still like to learn?
I would want to learn the other drugs that are available to young adults. Such as Xanax, Percocet, Oxycodone ect.
• What, if any, role did class discussions and your peers play in your project?
I believe with the peer reviews my classmates helped me a lot at first I was lost wasn’t really sure of the question I was even going to do my reach on. When I had a copy of my rough draft my peer corrected it and really made me open my eyes on the mistakes I had made.
• How has your thinking changed about research (if it has) since working on this project?
I believe when you conduct a research paper you should take a lot of time out in order to get a lot and valid information. Not everything on the internet is true.
• If you had another week to work on your research paper, what would you do with it? How would you change it?
I would defiantly write more, research more and if I could include more information into my essay that has to do with the play intersections.

Rough Draft for Research Paper
In today’s society we need college education in order to be successful in life. In order to have a comfortable life or something close to it. We go through so much school from Jr high to high school and college. After you graduate high school some adolescence are on the right path and go straight into college, but some don’t. Some need to take a moment on trying to find what they want to do with their life. Most young adults go into community colleges or some just need to find out what their passion is in life. There are some families who put pressure on you to do what they want you to study. Once you graduate high shool families or parents expect you to have a job or due to peoples own circumstances already have one. Just with work and school we have a lot of pressure and let me not get started on the stress families can give us. I know I have experienced stress many times you can go as far as gaining 20 pounds of weight to using weed and alcohol to cope with. Many adults have a hard time balancing work and school and keeping up with it. That’s where the challenge comes into place, and it’s hard not use weed or alcohol to help ease with the burden of daily living. All these major scenes in this play show you the stressors that many adolescence face. I many or my peers will be able to relate to these stressors and how this generation turns to these substances to live with. I want to use this paper to really help understand what college students go through in order for us to use something to get through our semesters, a shift at work or even on a daily basis.

Expectations for Assignment # 1

For my spoken word piece I chose to write a one act play on “Dear Mum”. I am aiming for an A in this assignment I have seen the video multiple times and I feel like I may have understood what the author of this poem is trying to express. Mothers are very important and sometimes we don’t value them like we should. I expect to put in a half a day on this assignment, Making it and writing it and also spending time in class with my peers getting feedback. Just because I like to reenact multiple times; for the reader to understand the feelings of the character that I’m trying to portray. I want the audience to really understand that they should appreciate their mothers, because you never know when they can go. I have a hint on how I would make this play I just need a push in the right direction to start it. I expect to spend time with my peer reviews in order to really make this an interesting play. I’m sure I can get tips on how I can make things better. I’m very excited to start this project and see how much it can bloom and really go in dept with it.

Pre Draft Assignment # 1

  • How can the format chosen for your assignment best be used to demonstrate deep analysis of poem? The format that I have chosen for my project would be the on act play. For the simple fact that I feel like I can express myself through the play so the viewers/readers understand how I’m trying to portray the poem. Also help them understand what since poetry at times is difficult to understand.
  • What is unique about the format you have chosen that will allow you to learn more about the poem than what is expressed on the surface?I believe in general a one act play to use as an analysis of a poem, is hard enough to even make. To catch someone’s attention and to understand it will be a challenge itself. This is why I picked it I like the challenge but also I want to make it interesting. I believe I will learn more about the emotion of the author and what he’s really trying to put out to his audience.
  • What questions or concerns or excitements do you have about creating a project in this format? My only concern would be that I want my one act play to be strong in the sense of it will have character and potential. That it will bring the message across of what the author of the poem is trying to say. If I don’t get that message across I did it for nothing.
  • What questions do you have about the poem itself?

He has a lot of guilt in this poem he feels as in he didn’t have enough time with his mom to     make things right after the mistakes he made. I wonder what the mistakes were. And what happened to his mom how did she pass away? Suddenly? Or was it an accident.

  • What pieces of it do you want to analyze and why?

I would want to analyze the part on where he consistently is saying sorry to his mom i felt like this part of the poem stuck out to me the most. He is really hurt and is asking for forgiveness from his mother multiple times. He also wishes to reunite with her in heaven, but he says that he hopes to get in himself.

“I love yo Ma and I’m sorry I’ve never told you all this before

I’m sorry for everything ma I’m sorry for it all

I’m sorry for leaving you as soon as you taught me how to crawl I’m sorry for

saying of every time you would ask me to complete a simple chore it doesn’t make

me less of a man to give you a hand whenever your arms gets all I’m sorry

again and again for all the promises i fell sure and I’m sorry I can give you

the life you wish for the car you jumped up and countries you wish to explore but

most of all I’m sorry for the pain that I caused for the nights you didn’t sleep

and for all those missed calls for the fights we had and for all the broken

walls the dirty room with the messy flaws and for the clothes that weren’t

pack back into their drawers in for all the sacrifices you made that are never

won several”

Rough Draft for Assignment 1

Poem: #Dear Mum

In the poem dear mum you can see he rehearsed and animated his video. He begins to demonstrate and convey his poem on how much he loves his mom he starts with how much love she had for him. How much she sacrificed for him when he refers to “left sleepless from dusk until dawn with weakness upon weakness for nine months”. After she gave birth how much she had to do to keep his stomach full and clothes washed .” wake up early every single more to stand freezing in the cold hanging up the clothes we had worn standing at the stove for hours cooking bowls”. Then he begins to get older into his teen years and starts going out having no remorse that he has his mother worried for him.” She could never sleep whenever we were gone she would stay up all night next to the phone although I would never call”. Reading the poem multiple times I also have the idea that his mom was a single mother raising her kids on her own. I also believe that she didn’t just have the author but multiple kids. He put the time and effort into having things as props, in order to really show his meaning in what he was saying. He set up in a kitchen which is where his mom spent most of her time, like any other stay at home mom. He explained how his moms would give him a cup of hot water with lemon and honey which he says was the best medicine. To him it was more than just a hot tea it was his mom’s love that made him feel better. “She gave to me was the best medicine that was pure a prescription of tea honey and handmade lemonade”. As he grew older his mom always took care of him like he was her baby even at the age of 14 he couldn’t sleep and he would call her into his room and she would tuck him back to sleep. “I would call you out from the bedroom door 14 you about seen tuck me in and kiss me”. In this poem he kind of gives the interpretation that his mom moved them to a different country so because of that she moved away from her own mother/family. “When you became my mother made the trip to move away from yours I know how much you love and miss her”.
