Early Gay Rights in the Cold War

The reading started in the winter of 1952 early in the Cold War where five Mexican Americans boys got into a fight with the police in Echo Park. The case became very popular which caused the CRC (congress rights congress) to launch a campaign in defense of the boys. Later on another local organization was created by the name of Citizens Committee to Outlaw Entrapment(CCOE) which also dealt with protecting citizens against police actions. This organization worked on getting the civil right group to pay attention to homosexuality. They claimed that homosexuals were an equivalent oppressed social minority to others. Most minorities who considered themselves as homosexual or homophiles were oppressed for their sexual orientation and actions. Which made many people want to eliminate homosexuals from the public eye. During the war, many psychologists came up with a strategy that can eliminate homosexuality. so they said. The believed with this strategy it will help eliminate both men and women from serving in the military. The cold war was a period of time, where the elaboration of a culture of hyper-masculinity as part of the American defense. It was pretty clear homosexuality was not accepting nor wanted back then. It was viewed as a crime to be attracted to someone of your same sex. In a certain paragraph from the reading it gave an example of how fellow inmates indicated that the Los Angeles police force would try to find anything to entrap and arrest any homosexually active men. Some police officers would go undercover to movie theater and watch the people in the audience. The police poured enormous amount of energy into stopping men from interacting sexually. Homosexuals have been fighting for equality for a very long time and still continue to do. Even though in todays society being gay is accepted by so many there are still some individuals who don’t fully accept it.
