Black Houston in the Wake of Harvey

Hurricane Harvey made landfall August 25, 2017 during the twelfth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and Irma. Ecologically, these events are in response to the regional petrochemical industry’s degradation of the Gulf Coast. Connected to this are the social and economic organization of harm throughout the region that historically influences the life of Black Houston. Keenly aware of this history our class sought to understand the prior and impending conditions of Black Houstonians in the Wake of Harvey. Our research was primarily cursory where we pulled together press, statistical and planning information, and oral histories to locate the geographical conditions. We invite your comments and critiques in what was our effort to apply critical course concepts to understand the issues of place.
