Language, there are a lot of languages all over the world and they could sound different or similar to others. I speak English and it is my only language but learning about another language is very interesting to me, being able to hear how those talk in the language and the sounds they make with their mouth. I’ve heard French before from videos to movies and even from my girlfriends grandfather. There are many dialects of french and One that I have chosen to talk about is Quebec French.

Quebec French is the predominant Variety of the French language in Canada. In an article called “The Differences Between French in quebec and France” it states ” The French that was brought to the colony was also isolated, during this time the noticeable differences between the French varieties began to appear. Standard European French developed with European influences, while Canadian French were infused with significant influences from the English language.” This shows where the language has come from and even thought canadian French is an umbrella term it still means that Quebec french was created during that time too. In 1977, the charter of the French language was drafted by the Parti Quebecois and it was to protect the French language which was known as Quebecois. This charter made Quebec French the primary Language used in business in Quebec. Now Quebec french is the primary language spoken in Quebec and is used in Ontario and New Brunswick.

Quebec French which is native to many places such as New Brunswick, Ontario, western Canada, and New England but the main place is obviously Quebec. There are 7 million native speakers in Quebec and 700,000 speakers elsewhere in Canada and the unidted states. There are so many people speaking this language and others that speak French that is very similar and they might have some views on this, but not only them. Quebec French shows a coherent and standard system. The office Quebecois de la langue francaise think that standardizing this French could lead to reduced mutual intelligibility with other communities that speak French. This can possibly cause the extinction of the French language. This causes quebeckers to have negative perception to their own language and want to improve it.

Quebec French which is the predominant variety of the french language in Canada, which is used in everyday communication, education, the media and government can sound very different from other french dialects in that same region. It is spoken in many places and by so many people not only in Quebec. Even till this day it’s not fully intact but they are trying to improve it.

Have you ever seen a linguistic landscape in your neighborhood or elsewhere? For the past three days we have been talking about and looking at examples of linguistic landscapes, they can inform us about the neighborhood in many ways such as Demographics, relationships, identity and social practices. These landscapes can tell us a lot about your neighborhood or others by just the way its placed.

My sign or linguistic landscape is on 67th avenue on Queens Blvd, this is from a neighborhood where you can find a lot of Russians or Chinese people mostly. As you can see by the font it is the same for both languages, the languages here are English and Chinese. I don’t see any difference between color in the languages and as you can tell there is a mix of different cultures, the sign to the right says knish which is something that is known to be eaten by jewish people. This landscape can tell us that there are Chinese people around the neighborhood and American people that might like that type of food that they make. I can tell by that because its not only in Chinese language it’s also in English which shows that they want more than their people to come in, they want people to come in and get what they are selling. I would say that there’s no really meaning to the sign that can show who they are mainly focus on because both of the languages are big and good enough to see from far away. There’s a mix of all people but I think that the main ones are Chinese, Russian and American people that live in my neighborhood, as I walk around you can find many different stores that can show you what the neighborhood is filled with. Mostly Russian restaurants and stores are filled up over here but you can still find other places that are from different cultures.

The neighborhood is more than just signs because there’s places that are for everyone its not focusing on that one ethnicity such as the big brand name resturants and clothing stores. I feel that my neighborhood is full of many cultures but based on what I see its mainly Chinese and Russian people, they have many stores around where I live. Another factor can be the cars that I hear in my neighborhood, all the Russian people seem to have all the new cars and you know they are new is when you can hear them roaring in the background when you’re walking.

Linguistics Landscapes are all around you when you go on the train or even when you walk around. The signs can show you many factors in the neighborhood, as seen in my landscape it shows that many Chinese and Russian people live in my area.

Q1: Is my essay clear and a good understanding of the neighborhood?

Q2: How can I expand more?

Language can shape your views about different people, but in a bad or good way? Can language mean high status or low status? People might think that their language is high status and might think that other people’s language is low status. In a certain situation can speaking in a unprofessional way or using slang make your language low status?

When other people speak different languages it doesn’t mean that it can be low or high status. Many people that speak different languages can speak in proper ways or professional ways. It doesn’t matter what language you speak you can still speak in a good manner. Everyone in the world either its high status or low status speaks in a professional ways, when you’re in a good mood and in a professional environment you will speak in a ways that should be spoken. My mom for example is not rich or high status, but she knows how to speak when she is around her colleagues or in a professional environment. I believe that all people can speak in a respectful and right way, without profanity or slang.

When you’re with your friends do you ever start to speak and use slang? Well for many people this is always happening no matter what language you speak. Whenever I speak to my friends or my family I tend to use slang and not in a way that is meant to be spoken to when I am at school or at work. I feel that this is always happening whether you’re high status or low status and  whatever language you speak. No matter what person it is they will use slang or might say words that are made up. Language should not be the way you see or view a certain person, that person might not be in a certain situation that makes them look like a good person its just where they might be comfortable. You should never judge a book by its cover, sometimes I think that just because a person is speaking Spanish or Jamaican or Chinese that they act or might seem like a bad person. This should not be the case, if you get to know them they will show you who they really are. I’ve had this situation happen to be many times where I would judge someone based on how they talk or what language they speak, and many many times I have been wrong about them. I have met many great people that speak different languages, at my job there are many people that speak different languages and they are very nice people that speak just like everyone else and know how to speak when spoken to.

Do you really think that language can shape your view about people? Language should not be something you judge someone on. It doesn’t matter who it is, getting to know someone is the key to understanding them, showing who they really are deep down and their identity.

Questions:

1.How can I further explain?

2.Is my explanation clear?

3.Do I go off track in the paper?
