What Families Need to know While Coping with Terminal Ill Patient

Some of us knows the strain and stress that you face when a love one has been hit with a terminal illness. It’s not only difficult for the patient but it can be a very challenging experience for those who are caregivers to the family member. These families are place in unstable situation with can be stressful for teens and young adults but, one should know that there are resources out there that can help you cope with dilemma. Resources require that individual communicate with patient, seek guidance, and plan for thy expected knowing that it is still a long road ahead.

When someone has to deal with a terminal ill person it best that the family communicate with other people who are dealing with the same situation as in Intersection the play the scene when Dr. Hernandez came in the hospital room to discuss the diagnosis of Janelle, Danielle and Travis grandma, they were told that their grandma was diagnosis with stage 4 cancer which is spreading quickly “Intersection” (6). Receiving bad new can be devastated as it was with Janelle and Travis they automatic felt that each have to make a discussion on who would do the caring for their grandma. They both forget that each of them had their own obligation before taking own the responsibility of caring for their grandma.

This happen to often in everyday lives. We encounter making discussion base on what we need to do not looking at the consequences of how it will affect our own being. According to the “National Cancer Institute” in order to be stress free it is important that one take care of herself first in order to take care of another. It is best to surround yourself around those who might be going through this type of dilemma a good source of theory.

In intersection, the play Janelle was so caught up making her grandma happy in her last days that she will have done anything to make her comfortable. After her and Travis came to the conclusion to take their grandma home instead of sending her to Hospice they should had consider their grandma feelings. If and Travis had done some research on the care that Hospice deliver I would suggest that they would had made a different decision. Hospice services provide palliative care to individuals with life expecting of six month or less. Countless amount of care is done in the home or can be at a Hospice facility. The “focus of hospice is not on treatment, but on pain and symptom management, comfort measures, and acknowledging that the individual will die (“Allison Jenkins, Encyclopedia of Health & Aging, p.135”).

Analyzing the hospital scene, you can see that it was fill with pain, disappointment and anger. Danielle was felt left out of making the decision, while Janell felt that her job was to take care of grandma, and Travis was only thinking about himself. This is normal for families to go through mix emotions. To many times when tragedy hit families they seem to not make the right resolution. This is what has been portray from the student of LaGuardia in this play intersection, the student is displaying all type of life scenario that one might encounter as a student but, these life situations can be a life learning that one can overcome.
