GRADING POLICY

Homework

Homework is pass/fail. If you hand in the assignment on time, you will receive full credit. Late or missing homework receives a zero. There are no makeups on homework.

If you are absent, you are still expected to complete the homework for the next class. All assignments are generally posted on the Schedule page of the website. If you are unsure of what is due, it is up to you to contact me.

Grade Breakdown

(REFER TO THIS FOR ALL PAPERS!)

“A” is above and beyond, NOT simply doing what is asked.  Traits of an A paper:

Original thesis; strong
intro
Smooth transitions
between ideas
Properly cited sources
Each paragraph has
ONE focus
Quotations are not
on “islands”
Correct use of MLA
format
Minimal grammatical
errors; Follows all
directions
Writer relates
evidence to thesis in own words; quotes analyzed
Each claim is supported with direct references
to the text

Also, use of outside sources (NOT WIKIPEDIA) is impressive.

B-range (80-89.9): Very good work, but with room for improvement.  Traits:

Thesis answers
question, but is
somewhat obvious.
Evidence is present,
but not made relevant by the writer…or…
Possibly contains
citation errors or
other MLA formatting errors
Paragraphs make
points, but may be
clumped together
…claims are present,
but writing lacks
textual evidence/
analysis.
Claims may be unclear or don’t relate back to the thesis
Grammatical errors
here and there affect
readability
Decent but flawed
usage of evidence; text misinterpreted
Solid overall, but
lacking the polish of an “A”

C-Range (70-79) Average paper; usually contains one major flaw.  Traits:

Thesis weak or absent
based on summary and not argument
Evidence may be present, but not made
relevant…or…
Sources are not cited
Answers question but
falls short of required word count
Claims are not supported by textual evidence. Paper does not
progress in logical
fashion
Mechanical/
grammatical errors are a distraction
Paragraphs are
disjointed, lacking
cohesiveness.
May answer
assignment in spots,
but lacks overall vision.

D-Range (60-69) Work in need of significant improvement.  . Traits:

Missing thesis;
question not answered
Missing source(s) Sources are not cited
Below word count Minimal to no analysis of sources Poor formatting
Distracting
grammatical errors;
hard to comprehend
Limited paragraph
structure
Shows lack of
understanding of
material

F (0-59.9): Unsatisfactory work.

Late Paper Policy:

  • Late papers get late (and sometimes limited) feedback.  This is to be fair to those who submitted early or on time.
WHEN DID YOU SUBMIT? WHAT IS THE PENALTY?
Within one week of the due date: Paper can only receive 95% (A)
Eight or more days late: Paper can only receive 75% (C)
More than two weeks late:See link: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/lgw8vbEYoeo/hqdefault.jpg
