The scene from the comic Ms. Marvel that stood out for me the most was when Kamala first transformed to Ms Marvel. This scene stood out to me the most because it does a really good job of showing how Kamala matures from an ordinary Teenage girl to a superhero. Although she does not like Zoe Kamala realizes Zoe is introuble Kamala’s fascial expression changed from being nervous and skeptical to being brave and heroic. One of the things that pushed Kamala to maturing is remembering a quote her father always told her “whoever kills one person, it is as if he has killed all of mankind and whoever saves one persons, it is as if he has saved all of mankind”. In the following panels Kamala goes on to save Zoe a mean/rude Teenage girl from her school. Kamala saves Zoe from drowning in the lake. She later reflects on her heroic actions this prompts her to realize that being a superhero is not how she expected it to be. In this panel she is staring out into the city, and is glad to say she lived a safe. The comic artist does a great job of showing this by having Kamala stare out into the city with all the mist from the terrigen bomb just flowing around her. She expected to have the great blonde hair and the same look as captain marvel, but instead the blonde hair gets in her face, and the high boots she imaged pinch her. She describes her powers as “like having a completely new sense”. Although she does not know how to control her powers yet she begins to gain more confidence in herself. Which reverts back to the 2 panels I brought up earlier. You can see the change in vibe that Kamala has in her face in the 2 panels. Her eye brows get low, and her face muscles tighten as if she is ready to fight crime. In conclusion anyone can gain the confidence to do anything they put their mind to just like Kamala did.

 

 

Artist Statement

I’ve learned a lot of important things by analyzing just 2 panels in this comic book. I’ve learned that by paying attention to the details it can give you a way better understanding of anything. By just analyzing those 2 panels I was able to put myself in Kamala’s shoes, and really get a field of the Kamala herself. I can use what I learned in future classes by paying more close attention to details. Maybe going over the material multiple to get a good understanding of the topic. Even taking things further so that I can really dig in to it is another important thing I learned. The process of peer review pushed my analysis forward, because my classmates were able to tell me what I needed to touch up on.

Naomi Iizuka has done a great job in keeping the audience engaged through out the play. She does this by constantly having the audience guessing if the whole play is a dream, and not realty, or what is Anon’s real name, and why he doesn’t mention his real name, and even hiding the location of the play. Naomi does all these things intentionally to have us confused. The big question I have is why? Why would Naomi want to confused her audience?

 

To better understand the play, I will be analyzing the process of playwriting. There is a long process involved in playwriting a play. One of the main elements is having a topic or a specific subject you want to get across to your audience. This can be a message to want to get across, or even bring up the attention of a modern day issue. This involves a lot of research just as Naomi did to create Anonymous. This also clicks together with how you want a member of the audience to perceive what you’ve created. Jean Tay gives a perfect example of the process of playwriting. “The process of playwriting is really 99 percent perspiration and one percent inspiration”. Playwriting is almost like a game you are designing. You create the characters, the setting, the topic etc. You even create how you want the audience to react in certain scenes. Another key element in playwriting is research. Without research a majority of the plays in history would of not been created. Wither your researching about mentally ill prisoners, or even immigrant children. You must have a good amount of information to even start to think about playwriting.

 

My question earlier was why would Iizuka want to confuse or disorient her audience? To better answer this question we have to look more closely at Iizuka previous work. “Everyone who works with her, thereafter always misses her, because she makes the creative process a pleasure, says Jon Jory”. Iizuka has found most of the material for her plays by just experiencing regular day to day things. The Los Angeles Times even states that “She also has mined stories and characters by browsing in bookstores”. Iizuka could have came across an article or a book about refugee which later lead her to create Anonymous. Which brings back my question why would she want to disorient her audience? She is targeting a specific crowd which are refugees, but she also wanted everyone to relate to the issue which is why she did not give a conclusion to the play. She wants everyone to create there ending of the story. She wants everyone to create the setting of the play. By doing this she allows the audience to relate more to the play because she is allowing them to fill the blanks in.

 

In conclusion Having a crowd constantly guessing through out a play is a perfect method in keeping their attention. In doing so Iizuka has successfully created a play where everyone can relate to not just Refugee’s and immigrants. She has created a play that we have control of and not some much her.

Naomi Lizuka has done a great job in keeping the audience engaged through out the play. I think Naomi Lizuka had to have done some research about the struggles refugees face when there in a new environment. I think Naomi does a great job in creating the characters in the play to play those difficult roles. What really stuck out to me in the play is not knowing the location of the play. Why would Naomi hide that from the crowd she is targeting? What message is she trying to get across to her crowd. This a question I would like to research on more closely. By researching this question, I would have a better understanding of the play when I read it the second time.

Reading Jonathan Mendoza’s poem instantly caught my attention. What struck me even more was the actually video of him reading the poem he wrote. The way he delivered his poem was excellent. Jonathan is facing a problem he does not not know if he is white or brown. In his mind Jonathan is constantly at war with himself not knowing if he is white or brown. I have made 3 important points that I got from his poem. The first point is when he says “Brown boy screams hides inside white skin white skin silence”. This is a very powerful point in the poem. He explains how in the inside he is suffering/seeking for help, but all of his emotions inside hide in his white skin. It bothers Jonathan that he is neither Brown or white he is both. He gives a great example of this when he says “White boy goes to white barbecue meets white cop white cop does not know boy is biracial starts talking immigration policy”. This connects perfect with the first point that I mentioned. Not only is he confused of his color but other people are confused as well. A lot of people just like the white cop see Jonathan as an ordinary white boy, and unknowingly bring up racial topics. I have a personal experience just like this that I would like to share. A close friend of mine is mixed he is Italian and Cuban. He is dark skinned and at the time that I met him he was new at my school. He didn’t have any friends or anyone to sit with during lunch, and I just seen it in his face he did not know where he would fit in. I think that connects well with Jonathan’s story because as crazy as it sounds they both do not know what color they are. Physically there one color but mentally there 2 colors.

The second important point he mentions is when he says “White boy visits family in Mexico realizes he’s the whitest intruder since conquistadors”. In a way Jonathan does not feel comfortable around his own family. He realizes he is the only white member in his family. As a personal opinion this can damage his relationship with his family. By him feeling out of place and uncomfortable with his family can cause him to react in a negative way. Negative as in he might not want to go out to eat or spend time with his family because of the simply fact that he does not feel comfortable being around them.

 The final point and the most important point of the three is when he says “Biracial boy is welcome everywhere, Biracial boy is not welcome everywhere”. He is lost, he is confused. His blood is brown but his skin is white which allows him to camouflage anywhere, but that also means he is not welcome in certain places where he should be welcomed. Camouflaging is one of the many issues Jonathan faces in his life. Fitting in the wrong crowd sounds odd but this is exactly what Jonathan does everyday. A perfect example of this is when he says “Brown boy goes to white synagogue is in the only family not invited to the dinner party”.Not only were the powerful words that he said touching, but what he was doing physically. His constant movement added an extra touch to the poem. He was constantly opening up his arms. At one point during the video you can see his veins popping out of head from all of the emotional he put into his poem. His behavior during his poem has not only showed me that he is passionate about writing, but that he worried about himself. He doesn’t have the answer to the question (Are you brown or white?)
