Social Problems and Social Movements
“They are not even promiscuously herded together in the way that creates community feeling among the American Negroes, the ghetto Jews, the workers of Saint-Denis, or the factory hands of Renault. They live dispersed among the males, attached through residence, housework, economic condition, and social standing to certain men – fathers or husbands – more firmly than they are to other women. If they belong to the bourgeoisie, they feel solidarity with men of that class, not with proletarian women; if they are white, their allegiance is to white men, not to Negro women.” De Beauvoir,”Woman as Other.”
Women have been split into categories like race and wealth. There’s no sense of community because there are other factors that distance them. Society has created so many divisions between them even though they may have a common goal. Women may see other women as less than themselves.
Sex And Gender By Simone De Beauvoir Quote:”In small-town eyes all persons not belonging to the village are “strangers” and suspects; to the native of a country all who inhabit other countries are”foreigners”; Jews are diffrent for the anti-semite, Negroes are “inferior” for American racists, aborigenes are “natives” for colonists, proletarians are the”lower class” for the privileged.
I chose this quote beacuse I think even though she is talking about feminism in general, here above we can see factors that affect our society since times till this day. Feminism is a result of many women feeling and seeing how we are the “others” the opposite of the absolutes (men) and in our culture we can also see how to feel superior there is always a target group or individual ( a woman) that need to be understimated, humiliated or racially discriminated in order for this society to function in a very racial and machista way. Women are still consider the “other” because man can think of himself without woman. she cannot think of herself without a man” that tell us how condition a woman is mind is since she is little. That’s why De Beauviour also claimes that ” a girl is treated like a live doll” and all this is definteley a state of culture.
Feminism is best defined as advocating women’s rights with the aim to promote equality between genders. In Simone De Beauvoir’s “Woman as Other” it states “Thus humanity is male and man defines woman not in herself but as relative to him: she is not regarded as an autonomous being”. This quote represents the reasons behind feminists fighting for equal rights. Autonomous is the inability to self govern. As women we are expected to cater to men and not form our own identity. As in the title of her article “Women as other” she forms the argument that we are seen and treated in society as secondary to men.
“No subject will readily volunteer to become the object, the inessential; it is not the Other who, in defining himself as the Other, establishes the One”. Simone de Beauvoir, Woman as Other.
I chose this quote and think that it’s significant because it states that no woman chose to be labeled as the Other or to be viewed as less than or not equal to man. No matter how brilliant or powerful a woman is they will still be seen by some as inessential.
“He is the absolute,-she is the other.” Page 346, De Beauvoir’s “Woman as Other.”
This quote urged me to the point that it’s frustrating. It’s sad because I feel that men unconsciously look down upon women especially during the work force or in a relationship. They will see that women has to be the weaker subject.
“Thus humanity is male and man defines woman not in herself but as relative to him; she is not regarded as an autonomous being.” What is being said is throughout history women haven’t been defined by there own achievements are merit, only by the status of the men in her life regardless if it’s her husband or father.
“They are women in virtue of their anatomy and physiology. Throughout history they have always been subordinated to men, hence their dependency is not the result of a historical event or a social change it was not something that occurred.”. Women have had their own ways of thinking and a way to study the world of the people involve which also includes the biology way to deal with the function of the womens brain and being different to men. Women being subordinated to men is the women working for the men and not having the power the say or do anything else because the men hold the power and the women treatment and being less important then ssomething else.
“Man can think himself without a woman. She can not think herself without a man.”I think this was the most important quote and one that stood out the most.Within this its describing several things without even mentioning it. More back then now it was frowned upon if a woman did not want to marry. It also brings up that a man can be without a woman for he will most likely be able to support himself and have little to no obstacles in contrast to a woman who would be looked down upon and most likely wouldn’t be able to support herself especially without an education exposing a gap in gender when compared a man, a woman is paid less for the same work.
one quote that caught my attention the most was “Man can think himself without a woman. She can not think herself without a man”. this made me feel sorry for women beause it is a very demeaning thing and that should not be the case. sadly there are some men in life that would think that this is true, and what’s even more sad is that there will be some women who are insecure enough to believe that this is true.
“Here is to be found the basic trait of women; she is the Other in a totality of which the two components are necessary to one another.” This is the concluding sentence that Simone de Beauvoir writes in “Woman as Other.” It is a quote that speaks volumes and illustrates a perspective of how women have been viewed historically. For a peculiar reason, women have been viewed as significantly inferior to men. They have been subordinated to men and have not necessarily had the same privileges and entitlement that men enjoy. Women have been hindered and viewed as “other” when indeed they are just as essential as men. The quote expresses that both components are essential to the other.
“The reason for this is that women lack concrete means for organizing themselves into a unit which can stand face to face with the correlative unit. They have no past, no history, no religion of their own; and they have no such solidarity of work and interest as that of the proletariat”.
Why this quote stand out to me is because women have nothing really of their own. Its tied up with men. They stick to men history more than with other women. The women community weren’t as gathered together or working together like other communities were. Mostly back then than in todays times.
“thus humanity is male and man defined woman not in herself but as relative to him, she is not regarded as an autonomous being.” The meaning behind this quote Is how women are basically a man’s definition rather than their own definition. Instead of being equal, it seems man always takes control and overshadows. It’s significant because it’s true.
“Thus humanity is male and man defines women not in herself but as relative to him; she is not regarded as an autonomous being.” Women in society are often only seen as an accessory to men. They are never asked about their personal attributes or regarded as their own person, especially when they have a significant other. This comes from centuries of lack of respect and the thought that women are meant to be an aid to men and nothing more. They were only seen for what they could provide, not for who they are as a person aside from that. Many women in our society today aren’t hired for jobs if they are wearing a wedding ring, because employers assume that they are going to have children and will not be able to work. They are regarded not by their skills or attributes only by what they provide and are commonly scrutinized.
“For him She is Sex-absolute sex, no less”. She is defined and differentiated with reference to man and he in reference to her; She is the incidental, the inessential as opposed to the essential. He is the Subject, he is the Absolute–She is the Other.” In this quote it is as if Men revolve around themselves. They don’t see Women as individual beings who are a necessary part of life and comes second, what is a woman without a man(figure)? And using Woman for nothing but Sex /an Object is philanderous.
“Culture is marked by mans ability to view biological relations as a series of contrasts; duality, alteration, opposition, and symmetry, whether under define or vague forms, constitute not so much phenomena to be explained as fundamental and immediate given data of social relations” This quote shows that history is majority ruled and controlled by men and how they bend the story.
