Another stereotype that is very common is that people believe that Brazilians speak Spanish and that’s their second language, but they don’t speak Spanish. Yes, it can be easy to get confused  since they shared some similarities in grammar and vocabulary but this doesn’t mean that’s the same language. Both Spanish and Portuguese are two beautiful languages spoken in completely different countries and have a different history as well.

We are always creating stereotypes and this can really affect some people or even worst the country. We create boarders where there’s none,  we are always making assumptions without taking our time on trying to figure out if the stereotypes are truth or not. or example if a tourist goes to Brazil with this stereotypes on their mind , maybe not necessarily the examples that I gave but there’s even worst stereotypes  , but the tourist won’t be able to take a chance to enjoy the culture, the language of this beautiful country.

This doesn’t only happened in Brazil , but it happens in many minority groups. People that don’t have the “power” or the chance to speak up for themselves, those are the ones who are always being judged and they have to faced these kind of stereotypes on their day to day. Some people may see it as an innocent mistake or if the ones being attacked are just being “sensitive” , but imagine waking up and from the minute you get out of your house you were already labeled. after a while keeping up with all of these stereotypes like mistaken your language can become annoying , because is a language that is part of you, part of your culture, part of what represents you and It’s  not fair for others to misinterpret your culture.

Even though this is a bilingual sign , the dominant language of this linguistic landscape is Spanish , because the targeted audience is Spanish speakers. They use black for both languages, but sometimes you would see in certain linguistic landscapes a language in a more vibrant color. Usually they would used a more outstanding color to show the dominant language, depending on the area where the sign is.

What I found interesting was that around Roosevelt there would be more linguistic landscapes with colors like red , yellow and blue, which they probably do that so the audience feels a certain connection or just to grab the attentions since they are bright colors.

My first language is Spanish and English is my second language. Sometimes I feel more comfortable talking in Spanish and sometimes I only feel comfortable talking in English. It really depends where I am and who am I talking to. I had problems at school when I tried talking in Spanish to some of my friends, there was always a random person coming to me to stop speaking Spanish, because we are only supposed to speak “English” here. I feel good about myself for speaking two languages, I don’t feel embarrassed to embrace my culture. My language represents who I am as a person.

A lot of non Spanish speakers think that Spanish is really hard to learn and that the ones that speak it , talk really fast. But just like with any other language , there’s different accents . I’m from Mexico , from the north . My accent is different compared with some members of my family from the south. even though I considered myself fluent in Spanish , there’s still some words that I have trouble understanding.

I don’ think that Spanish is seen as a prestigue from a higher status, not even the people. I feel like we are always seen as less or as not educated. But like I said before, Spanish is part of me and I always love embracing my culture.English has also become now part of me and my thoughts are always in English, my notes and the shows that I watch are also in English. So I use both languages equally and I think it has given me more opportunities in jobs, school and in my daily life.

To conclude I think we always seem to judge what we don’t know. Every language is different , but all of them have the same purpose which is to communicate and express ourselves. Language is what makes us who we are and we should always embrace it.
