My Research Topics

For my research paper i came across a few interesting topics. Being a Criminal Justice Major i normally like to stick to topics that fit in with what i would like to peruse and concentrate on in the future. The one topic that has stuck with me is immigration and how immigrants migrated to the U.S. I am thinking about interviewing an immigrant and also a friend of the family which works for a immigration law firm. I feel like this would be a great topic and very informative to people with any interest.

  1. Kavita, thanks for posting your topic. I strongly recommend that you flesh this out, and try to be more specific in coming up with a topic (or two). Immigration to the U.S. is a very broad topic. Some ways you can make this more specific include: Researching a particular ethnic/racial/linguistic/religious group’s migration to the U.S., looking at specific time periods of immigration, examining the effects of immigration policies.

You might also find it helpful to skim a book that provides an overview of immigration to the United States. For example, you could check out Alejandro Portes’s Immigrant America: A Portrait. Take a look at the different cases to see if anything jumps out at you. If you find a topic of interest, head to the end of the book to see what sources he cited in the bibliography, in relation to that topic. Follow up on those sources as you flesh out a topic and develop your research question.
