LaGuardia Writing Center

Greetings from the Writing Center!

Writing Center tutoring is available primarily by appointment, not on a walk –in basis, due to a severe budget cut.   To get a tutoring appointment, all students need to do is log into My LaGuardia and scroll down; the red Writing Center Appointment buttonis on the lower right side. As the appointment page states, students must be on time for appointments, and after five minutes appointments may be given to students on the Wait List.  Students without an appointment may walk in before the beginning of the period they’d like to see a tutor, and ask to be put on that Wait List in case there are openings because of students who do not keep their appointments.

In addition, students can now use the Writing Center’s computer lab as a Writing Room: a place to write their papers with a tutor on hand to answer specific questions and provide brief feedback about their papers while in the process of writing. The Writing Room is not a tutoring setting; it’s like writing a paper in the library or the computer lab, with the important difference that a tutor is on site for short, in-process questions (not a paper review). Students can use the Writing Room, B 203,  without an appointment and, at least for now, stay as long as they like. We’ll send the hours of the Writing Room in a separate memo.

The nature, quality and character of the regular tutoring students receive at the Writing Center will remain unchanged:

The Writing Center, in sunny B200,  continues to offer individualized (1:1 and 2:1) tutoring on any aspect of any phase of any kind of writing, including:

●          finding or narrowing a focus

●          working out an outline or writing plan

●          developing paragraphs

●          using quotes and citation appropriately

●          zeroing in on specific grammar issues

●          reviewing a finished piece before submission

●          revising graded work

For all this and more, for any academic course or other writing purpose, such as personal statements and essays for scholarships and transfer applications, the Writing Center offers trained, professional tutors at these times:

          Monday –  Friday:  9:15 AM – 3:15 PM & 4:30 PM – 9:00 PM

          Saturday: 10:30 AM  –  3:15 PM (walk-in only)

We are open to all LaGuardia students who have begun taking English courses beyond the ESL level, whether or not they are now taking an English course. Students taking content-area courses in social sciences, humanities, health services, business administration etc. comprise almost half of the students who use the Writing Center each term.
